Eight swimmers from Ealing Swimming Club joined a Middlesex County Team which competed with great distinction in the 41st International Meet held in Geneva from 18th to 20th January.
The well balanced team consisting of 32 swimmers aged between 12 and 23 with 6 staff from five different clubs, had the opportunity to compete in a high class International meet against swimmers from all over Europe and the USA and Canada. The county swimmers achieved excellent results and benefited greatly from the experience. Ealing swimmers were James Crawford, Charles Turner, Georgina Heyn, Jenna Turner, Lauren Turner, Natalie Durant, Zak Shafique and Tariq Miller and Allan Thornton joined the coaching team which was led by county coach Dave Hobbs (Camden Swiss Cottage). In order to be selected for the team, swimmers had to rank in the top 20 in Great Britain in their age group at the 1st September last.
Overall results achieved by the County team were: -
•In the Team Competition Middlesex were the Third placed Federation behind National teams from Canada and Belguim.
•Individual swimmers won five Silver and seven Bronze medals.
•County competitors reached 46 Finals.
•A new County Long Course record.
•A total of 86 National Qualifying Times were recorded by Middlesex swimmers for National Bagcat and Youth Championships, National Championships and Olympic trials.
Of the above results, Ealing swimmers were responsible for the new County record of 23.16 gained by Charles Turner (23) in the 50m freestyle, a silver medal won by Natalie Durant(17) in the 17/o 200m freestyle, and bronze medals won by Turner in the open 100m freestyle and Durant in the 400m freestyle. Charlie Turner was also ranked first in the 50m freestyle on the basis of his performance in the freestyle skins competition where he ultimately finished third and Natalie gained 4th place in the 200m backstroke, 6th place in the 100m backstroke and 8th place in the 100m freestyle.
Other Ealing finalists were Georgina Heyn (23) who came 4th in the 100m breaststroke, 5th in the 200m breaststroke and 100m freestyle; Lauren Turner (15) who was 4th in the 15/16 100m backstroke and sister Jenna (17) 8th in the 17/o 200m freestyle. James Crawford (19) was 7th in the 100m backstroke.
Ealing swimmers also achieved between them a grand total of forty-seven national qualifying times.
The swimmers all greatly enjoyed the meet and were very grateful to Middlesex County for organising and funding the trip.
