David Barnes (President)

David has been involved in the world of swimming for nearly 30 years and has been a member of Ealing Swimming Club for all that time.

Starting out by assisting with club activities at Northolt, he soon progressed to joining the local committee and becoming the Gala Secretary for Northolt  organising part of their inter-club competitive programme of events.

He became an Official in order to help out on poolside and over the years has progressed to the point where his is now a Licensed British Swimming Referee who has a County and Regional role in the training and examination of new officials.

Within the Club he progressed to being Chairman of the whole Club, a position he held for many years. When Johnny Wright took over the reins, he took on the role of Club President, a position he still holds.

As well as being involved with his work with officials he has been a member of the Middlesex County ASA Executive since 1994 and was County President in 2004. In addition he has been a member of the Swimming Judiciary at a National level for many years, chairing disciplinary and arbitration hearings in order to promote and preserve natural justice and discipline within the sport.

Despite all of the ancillary tasks above, he still has Ealing Swimming Club close to his heart and is looking forward to the challenging times that lie ahead

Mike Gallagher (Education manager)

Born Dublin; Ireland

Member of  ‘Crusade Swimming Club’  throughout my childhood.

Competed to county level; No great success - late developer?

Been involved in swimming most of my life; except for a sojourn in Ghana, West Africa from 1974 – 1982

Since then I qualified as a Level 2 Teacher in swimming and worked on a voluntary basis within Ealing Swimming Club from 1994 – 1999.

My children swam in House and in Squad and during that time I became more involved in Teaching  and in Masters swimming. I enjoyed the glories and the pitfalls of being a ‘Squad Parent’

From 1994 I became involved in working with the Amateur Swimming Association in Tutoring Level 1 & Level 2 Teachers courses. With the introduction of the recent UKCC levels of teaching and coaching qualifications I now tutor Levels 1 & 2 Teaching Aquatics Qualifications and Level 1 & 2 Coaching Qualifications. I coach/teach with Ealing Dolphins and have for the past 10 years co-ordinated the House’s teaching and coaching.

I find swimming an invigorating and exciting environment. It is one, which can engage people from the cradle to the grave.  I am on that route and am thoroughly excited about the successes of young Ealing Swimmers.

I hope to be involved in this development for quite some time yet.

His competitive swimming career peaked at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 where he won a Bronze Medal in the 100m Butterfly where he lowered his own British and Commonwealth Record.  This followed Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, European championships, US Open and numerous National Championship titles and British Records as both junior and Senior on 3 different strokes.

Following his schooling at Kelly College in Devon, Andy trained for 5 years at Arizona State University during which time he won his Olympic Bronze, but also represented England and Great Britain in 5 other Olympic finals over 2 Olympics, won 4 Commonwealth medals at 2 different Commonwealth Games, won 3 European Championships Medals, and for a while was the Fastest British swimmer on Butterfly Backstroke and Freestyle.

David Lillington (Committee Member)

John McDonnell (Hon. Secretary)

My name is John McDonnell, (no relation to the M.P!)  Though I am not from Ealing, I do come from an adjoining borough, where I have lived for many a year. As a young man, I fell under the spell of a local young woman ( Ceri)  and have remained under that same spell for the last 20 years. During that time, I've had to endure endless fun, late nights, early mornings and her passions ( which I've also been forced to enjoy) for family, fun and France -  i.e. basically having a good time.

I have been a member of Ealing Swimming Club for about 6 years, and our two daughters, Laura and Sian, currently swim for the Club.

Having been kidnapped by Johnny Wright  at a very young age and taken to a local brewing establishment, I awoke some days later to find I'd joined the Ealing Swimming Club Committee, where I continue to serve my time.  I've been assured my case will be reviewed at the next parole meeting. Most mornings I can be found in the gallery at Gurnell.

Leah Pullen (Committee Member and Web-Master)

Born in Hong Kong, Leah Pullen now resides in the UK with her husband and 2 sons, both of whom are swimmers with ESC. Although the older one has now moved on to Water Polo and Life-Guarding, the younger still swims 5 times a week with the Club and Leah can generally be seen sitting up in the Gallery watching the training.

Recently returned to university to study, Leah splits her time between running a busy household, university, running the website and helping run meets for ESC.

Jan Wright (Admin. and Development Manager)

Drawn into the world of swimming through her three daughters, Jan has been the Club’s Administration and Development Manager for 10 years. This is a part time role which somehow seems to take over most waking hours but which for the most part Jan still finds stimulating and enjoyable.

Jan’s background is legal – she was a solicitor with the city firm of Withers and then moved part-time to May, May and Merrimans until she finally retired on the birth of her second daughter.

Her interests are music, gardening, travelling and cooking, her family and her dogs who also seem to take up a lot of time – very enjoyably.

Johnny Wright (General Manager)

Johnny Wright is 66, Married to Jan ( see above) and has 3 reasonably grown-up daughters, all of whom used to be ESC swimmers. Johnny has spent most of his time in the advertising world and still acts as a consultant in that industry.

He was a not-very-successful Sponsorship Secretary on the ESC Committee for two years before becoming Chairman of the Club in 2004.

He is  passionate about cricket, rugby, travelling, the family dogs and reading.

Johan van der Flier (Waterpolo)

Born in the Netherlands in 1976, Johan moved to England in 2000 and eventually settled down in Greenford in 2004, where he straight away joined the water polo section of the club. Johan has been swimming and playing water polo since he was little, and was previously a National League player with Bristol.

Johan has been a real influence in the revival of Ealing Crabs' and the team's subsequent successes. He was the Club's Vice-Captain for five years until he became Club Secretary early in 2009 and joined the ESC Executive Committee. He is also part of the small team charged with Water Polo development in West London
